All I Want

I've just put in my Discount Comic Book Service order. They've updated their site with the new Previews catalogue. Here's what I'm spending my hard earned moo-la on.... and why:

COLOSSUS GN - I bought this when it originally came out in 2000 through Scott Morse's Crazyfish/MJ-12. Now, it's getting the "redux" treatment with new pages and whatnot. Sold!

BATMAN YEAR ONE HUNDRED #2 - Paul Pope on a Batman book. Sold!

DAREDEVIL #83 - Writer Ed Brubaker Penciled by Michael Lark Cover by Tommy Lee Edwards. I've become a fan of Brubaker's so I'm giving this a go. Lark and Edwards are the icing on top.

EXTERMINATORS #3 - Tony Moore draws nice stuff.

FEAR AGENT #6 - See above reason.

GODLAND #9 - I seriously LOVE this book. I thought the Kirby "homage" art of Scioli would bug me..... but it doesn't. I go as far to say that I like it. It works. And Casey is making it a very fun(ny) read.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #16 - Written by Ed Brubaker. There's that name again......

AMERICAN VIRGIN #1 - The Frank Quitely cover is very intriguing(image to the right). The interior art is by Becky Cloonan, who I've seen do some nice work. It's the writer that may be the weak link here. I'm not a fan of Steven T. Seagle, but I'll give it a try.......

POPBOT #7 - Ashley Wood draws great stuff.

THOR: BLOOD OATH TP - I was looking through some back issues of this at my LCS and was impressed with the art work of Scott Kolins. I didn't grab it then because they were missing some issues. I opted to wait for the trade.

AQUAMAN: SWORD OF ATLANTIS #40 - I'll go on record as saying I've NEVER bought an issue of Aquaman. Never. So chalk this sale up to the new direction and the addition of Kurt Busiek and Butch Guice.

YOUNG BLUEBERRY: YANKEE NAMED BLUEBERRY SC - Moebius does the art for this "Warehouse Find". That's all I need to know.

I'd like to add...... *DIGITAL WEBBING PRESENTS #28* - This is a book that I have a subscription through the Digital Webbing site.

Horse With No Name

I wanted to mention that today is the release of A. David Lewis' LONE AND LEVEL SANDS hardcover! I've seen the colour promo pages and they look amazing. I urge you all to make a mental note for yourselves to have a look through it when you go to your LCS today. ADL and mpMann (the book's talented artist) had a great book when it was released in B&W last summer.... but, with the addition of some gorgeous colouring, supplied by Jennifer Rodgers, this hardcover is the way this story needed to be seen!

The Cars by The Cars

Another classic debut album. This puppy is non-stop greatness. One of it's tracks, "Moving In Stereo", is by far the best Cars song. Ever.

Just What I Needed

I scored a few major Boxing Day deals yesterday when I went down to my LCS (Local Comic Shop... for those non comic book people out there).

The first one was the Alien Legion graphic novel that Marvel published in 1986. I picked this baby up for 50% it's original cover price of $6.95 Canadian! I've been eyeing the new Alien Legion trades that Checker has been putting out which collect all the Marvel issues. But, they're pretty pricey.... So this puppy fills my immediate AL need very nicely!

I managed to pick up the 7th volume of the wickedly entertaining STRAY BULLETS, by David Lapham, for 75%! Actually, I picked up volumes 3,4 & 5 for 50% off at last year's Boxing Day sale.

And.. the last and best deal of the day was getting the MURDER ME DEAD trade at 75% off! I have been thinking about getting this book for quite a while, as I love STRAY BULLETS, and there it was, like a shining beacon of Christmas Joyousness..ness.... ah, you know what I mean.

There you have it. Another great Boxing Day of comic book deals! Now I have to save my "extra" money for the deals at this summer's San Diego Comic Con...... and the suitcases to get them home.

I'm going to cut into these as soon as I get some time...... maybe next Christmas!

Internal Exile by Fish

This was the second solo album from Fish. He is the former singer of the prog rock band Marillion. This album has it's great moments (Shadowplay and Credo) but we can begin to see the end of inspired songwriting here for Mr. Derek Dick (aka Fish). Sadly, the following album, Suits, is largely unlistenable

Dear Friend

I'd like to take this opportunity to say Merry Christmas to all you wonderful people that drop by my humble blog, No Quarter. I truly appreciate the fact that you take time out of your day to stop by and see what I’m blabbing about.

Remember to drive safely, drink responsibly and love your fellow man..... not necessarily in that order, though.

I hope Santa is good to you all! See you next week!

American Stars and Bars by Neil Young

Not the best Neil Young album but it does contain a few amazing tracks. "Like A Hurricane" and "Will To Love" are true Neil classics. And the album cover is a hoot!

Star Of Bethlehem

HO! HO! HO! MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Only one more day of work until my Christmas holidays kick into full gear!
It's Stewart's first Christmas, so Jackie and I are really looking forward to sharing it with him (although, we're going to play it pretty mellow for the boy, as he is only 5 months old). He's not going to know what's going on but it will be special all the same.

This year, Santa will only be dropping by to leave gifts for Stewie. Jackie and I already got our present.

On a less sappy note, my Atlanta Thrashers may have managed to turn their frown upsidedown..... Kari Lehtonen practised with the team on Monday and may be ready to start as early as Dec 26! It would be his first game back since injuring his groin in Atlanta's openning night contest on October 5! I just hope that they aren't rushing him back before he is fully healed. That may have sounded like sarcasm( and, being from me, it would be expected) but I'm saying it with all sincerity.

Supper's Ready

You want to see something scary?

Here’s a book that crosses my path at least once a month at work. It’s called “Still Hungry” by Richard “Sweatin’ To The Oldies” Simmons. Every time I see this cover it gives me the creeps. Check out his eyes! Man, if I didn’t know that those eyes weren’t Simmons’, I’d swear they belonged to a serial killer. And the fork in the teeth is pretty creepy, too. You can clearly see the method he’d choose of for disposing of the body….. Still hungry, Dick?

Another Record

I bought the new 2cd Kate Bush album, Aerial, a fews weeks ago. It's good to see Kate back making music. The first disc, Sea of Honey, is solid. There are a few tracks that don't quite do it for me but overall, it's quite good. The second disc, Sky of Honey, is most excellent. It's a "conceptual suite" that covers the progression of a 24 hour day. I'm a total sucker for conceptual albums, so it's no surprise that I really dig this disc.

Anyways, I've been listening to Aerial every night since I picked it up. It fits the latenight drawing bill perfectly. I've also been listening to Tool's Lateralus and Kyuss' .... And the Circus Leaves Town.

Thunder and Consolation by New Model Army

The quintessential NMA album. Fiery and poetic. A punch in the face and a kiss on the forehead.

Green and Grey

The last few weeks I've been trying to catch up on some of my comic book reading. I was reorganizing "The Pile" and found my issues of The Gray Area, the creator owned title from John Romita JR that came out through Image in 2004. I read the first issue way back when it came out and thought it was ok. Then there was a large gap of time till the second issue, so I decided, instead of reading it, I would wait until I got the rest of the series before sitting down to read them. I wish I had read the second issue when I got it.... then, maybe, I wouldn't have wasted the $7 (or whatever rip off Canadian price I paid) for the final issue.

Any of y'all read this? The art was excellent. Romita Jr and Klaus Janson are in full swing. No surprise there. But the story...... it was hard to put my finger on what exactly was the problem for me. Was it a case of too much to say and not enough space to say it, resulting in a shattershot of moments? Was it a case of a main character I totally didn't care for? Or maybe, it was that the promise of John Romita Jr unshackled from the Marvel yoke never realised it's full protential. I dunno.... but the final reading experience was very disappointing, to say the least. It's too bad, cuz I really wanted to like this book.

Sharp Dressed Man

The second package I got on Friday was my t-shirts from Threadless.com. They were having a $10 sale and I had to get in on some of these wicked designs! The four images above are the shirts I ordered.

It's a cool site with many many many cool shirts to order from. You can even vote on designs that people have submitted for future shirts. So, if you're looking to pick up some designer T's at pretty reasonable prices, you should check them out!

I've been in the process of updating my T-shirt collection. I'm a jeans and t-shirt kinda guy and I tend to wear the stuff I have. To. Death. Every once in a while (like this past July), the shirts I have in current rotation all decide to fall apart at the same time. I made it my mission to replace my old stuff with cool new stuff. These 4 shirts are the last of my updates that accomplish this mission!

Now I need to find some more cool 'ball caps!

Thirteenth Step by A Perfect Circle

I bought the first A Perfect Circle album, MER DE NOMS, and was slightly dissapointed. So, when I decided to buy this, their second album, I was not expecting to be blown away. Well, blown away, I was. It plays closer to a Tool album than the first one did, which is probably why I love it so much.

The Package

Wow. Long time no write.

I took a puck in my hand last Sunday and it threw me off my blogging pace. I was struck by a slap shot on my ring finger that caused it to swell up pretty bad. Luckily, I took my wedding ring off before it got really swollen! I don't think I broke it ( my finger, not the ring (and no, I didn't go to the hospital to have it x-rayed)) but it sure did/does hurt. I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm going to lose my nail on that finger. We'll see. I play again this coming Tuesday night. It should be feeling better by then.....

It was like Christmas today! I got 2 packages in the mail, just hours apart from each other. The first one was my latest shipment of comics from DCBS! Here's what comic book treasures were encased within:

  • Y: The Last Man vol1 TPB
  • Y: The Last Man vol6 TPB
  • Catwoman: When In Rome HC
  • Sleeper vol2 (season 1)
  • Smoke TPB
  • Invincible vol2
  • Doomed Magazine #1

I'm so stoked to get into these! Especially the Doomed Mag. Not only does it contain art by Ashley Wood, the magazine also showcases sequential work by Ted McKeever and Eduardo Barretto! IDW has a great eye for talent, as this book, and Smoke, clearly demonstrates.

I'm picking up the trades for Y: The Last Man after reading the first 4 volumes that I found at my place of work..... the Vancouver Public Library! I think Jackie is going to love this series, too.

I'll tell you about the second package in my next post.

Last post's title was a song title from: ssss Rebel Yell by Billy Idol

Billy Idol was one of the first music artists that I REALLY got into. I freakin' LOVED this album! I was so into him that I even spiked my hair. It lasted about a week until I found out that styling my hair was not as easy as it looked.

The Dead Next Door

Stacie Ponder has done it again!

Not only does Stacie supply the Blogosphere with the hugely entertaining FINAL GIRL, she has decided to go one further and started up another blog, FOUR COLOR GIRL! The new site will be her place to talk up her "portfolio/project update/art diary/journaly-type" stuff.... like her wicked mini-comic entitled, "They Won't Stay Dead!". There is a 3 page sneak peak of it up right now!

Go check out both her blogs! Donald commands it!
